It’s Terrific Tuesday, AND Spring Break, AND Darling Hotbuns’ Gaming Geek night, so this means Mini Maven & I have the joint all to ourselves! We’re thinking about baking some cupcakes. ::slaver:: As many of you may have surmised, I’m a fan of red velvet ANYTHING. If given the chance, I bake things that are red velvet more often times than not. And the sinister truth is that I am actually gluten free — I have what is called Celiac Disease, which is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats. Therefore, I either have to bake gluten free delicious desserts that can be quite contrary with each recipe –OR– I can just bake like (I think I am) Paul Hollywood and go berserk on that egg beater. Pa-POW! I *wub* to bake, so much so that most of the time I just bake for my loved ones and get my jollies out of smelling up the house something sweet for my sweets. ::smile:: I always tell Mini Maven, “I love you more than the whole cosmos with icing, sprinkles, and a cherry on top!” She should know it, because gosh beaver dam it if it’s not hard to lick the spoon of pain!
When I first met DH, I baked him treats all of the time — cookies, brownies, and mostly truffles. I did that until he told me I was fattening him up and interfering with his Arnold workout. ::snicker:: (It’s not a tumor. It’s a mass of truffle!) I enjoy baking so much, but I am not fancy. I’ve never worked with fondant or been too overly courageous with my decorating. Since I am of the creative sort, I want to get fun & fancy! Now that we’re moving into this new house with such a glorious, open kitchen (with more counter space than outer space), I am looking forward to giving it a whirl!
In recent years, cupcakes have exploded as the new hot thing! They’ve begun to take over the birthday & wedding cake, even! Cupcake bakeries are popping up all over, and I never dreamt their popularity would hold out this long, but the industry is growing by the measuring cup. I can’t get over what people do with cupcakes nowadays! They come out of the box too pretty and detailed to eat. I am constantly astounded by the skill that goes into topping off cupcakes. With the artistic ability they put into just one, it’s no wonder that a business can thrive because it seems too cheap to charge $5 for just one. Truly amazing little mouthfuls of masterpiece. #awestruck It’s a bit intimidating, but I like a challenge. Plus, I want an excuse to buy these far-too-stupidly-cute oven cupcake boxes to hand deliver them in! #crush
I won’t be able to go from traditional cupcakes (with merely a dollop of cream cheese icing and shimmery sugar crystals) to anything you’d see on Cupcake Wars, but ya gotta start somewhere! So here are some references I have found that I’d like to give a go when my inner Betty Crocker comes out to play:
And whatever you do — even if you set off the smoke detector & forget the sugar — remember that…
If you have not followed me on Twitter yet, make sure that you do. I tweet all these cool finds randomly throughout the day, every day — direct links so you can order them for yourself!
Keep calm & BAKE on, Mavens!

<—- This is me baking in my mum’s (*VERY* ’70s harvest-y golden retro) kitchen at Christmastime. Isn’t this how all women do it?! I give you all new meaning to Cheesecake photo, sugars. #justspreadmeonacracker
